Factors resulting in the increase of Knowledge

1 Acceptance of guidance/proof

“While as for those who accept guidance He increases their guidance and bestows on them their taqwa”
(Muhammad 47:17)

2 Action (al faraai’d wan nawaafil) upon knowledge

Abu Hurayrah reports Nabi (saw) “Allah ta’ala said ‘Whoever shows enmity to a close friend of Mine then I declare war on him. My slave does not draw closer to Me with anything more beloved to Me than the faraa’id. My slave continues to draw closer with acts of nawaafil until I love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he grasps and his foot with which he walks. If he asks Me I will definitely give to him and if he seeks refuge with Me I will definitely give him refuge.” (BUKHAARI)

3 A’qeedah (Tawheed)

  i) GENERAL “…Whoever rejects Taaghoot and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is Sami’un A’leem. Allah is the Wali of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their awliyaa’ are Taaghoot, they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever.” (al Baqarah 2:256-257)

ii)SPECIFIC TO I’LM “He grants hikmah to whom He pleases, and he to whom hikmah is granted, is indeed granted abundant good. But none remember except men of understanding.” (al Baqarah 2:269)

4 Taqwa

“O you who believe! If you have taqwa of Allah, He will grant you a criterion (furqaan) and will expiate for you your sins and forgive you and Allah is the Owner of the great bounty.” (al Anfaal 8:29)

5 Not blocking the varied paths

Abu Hurayrah reported that Nabi (saw) said “The word of hikmah is the straying animal of the haakim and wherever he finds it he has a right to it.” (IBN MAAJAH, TIRMIDHI). Abu Hurayrah …..“That was Shaytaan.” (BUKHAARI [Eng/Arabic vers. vol 3 no.505, vol4 no.495, vol.6 no.530] NASAA’I in ‘al Yawm wal Laylah’ DAARIMI [no.532]) Abu Hurayrah reports Nabi (saw) “Men are like mines of Gold and Silver. The best among you in the days of jaahileeyah are the best among you in Islam as long as they have fiqh of the deen” (MUSLIM [mishkaat vol.1 p.346])

6 Du’a

“My Lord increase me in knowledge” (Ta Ha 20:114) “Guide us onto the Path that is Straight” (al Faatiha 1:5)

7 Use of the Intellect [Al A’ql]

“…Thus do We explain the signs in detail for a people who use their intellects (ya’qiloon)” (ar Room 30:28) and “Verily, the worst of creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and the dumb, those who don’t use their intellects.” (al Anfaal 8:22)

8 Rational Thought [at Tafkeer]

Allah (swt) says “…Thus do We explain the ayaat in detail for a people who reflect [liqawmin yatafakkaroon]” (Yoonus 10:24) It is reported that Wahb ibn Munabbih said ‘One who thinks a lot will understand reality and one who understands will arrive at sound knowledge and one who has sound knowledge is bound to act accordingly.’ (IBN KATHEER)

9 Listening

That is listening to the words of Allah, the messenger, the scholars and those whom call to good. Allah (swt) says “He it is Who has appointed the night that you may rest therein and the day to make things visible. Verily in this are signs for people who listen” (Yoonus 10:67)

10 The Pure Arabic Language

“Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran in order that you may understand.” (Yusuf 12:2) and “And thus, We sent it down to be a judgement of authority in Arabic. Were you to follow their vain desires after the knowledge which has come to you, then you will not have any wali or defender against Allah.” (ar Ra’d13:37) and “And thus We have sent it down as a Quran in Arabic and have explained therein in detail the warnings, in order that they may fear Allah, or that it may cause them to have a lesson from it.” (Ta Ha 20:113)

11 The Remembrance of Allah (swt)

“Therefore remember Me I will remember you. And be grateful to me and do not be ungrateful.” (al Baqarah 2:152) “…Say: ‘Verily, Allah sends astray whom He wills and guides unto Himself those who turn to Him (in repentance).’ Those who believed and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily in the rembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (ar Ra’d 13:27-28) “The believers are only those who when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His ayaat are recited to them they increase their imaan and they put their trust in their Lord.” (al Anfaal 8:2) “

12 Reading the Qura’n

A’bdullah ibn A’mru ibn al A’ss reports that Nabi (saw) said “Whoever reads the Quran inserts the prophethood between his ribs though wahi is not sent upon him. It does not befit one endowed with the Quran that he should be indignant with those in anger nor should he indulge in any act of ignorance with the ignorant while in his body is the Word of Allah.” (AL HAAKIM who said ‘saheeh isnaad’) Allah (swt) says “ Verily this Quran guides to that which is most straight and gives glad tidings to the believers.” (al Israa 17:9) and “This is the Book whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to the mutaqeen.” (al Baqarah 2:2) Ibn A’bbaas reported that once Jibra’eel (as) informed Rasool Allah (saw) that many fitnahs will certainly appear. Nabi (saw) asked “What will be the way out, O Jibra’eel?” He replied “The Book of Allah” (RAZEEN)
